You measure your starting rate when you first start your speed reading training sessions.
Then your Ending Rate will be the rate you calculate at the end of your session for that day, using another 2 minute timed session after your 10 minutes of reading practice homework.
The next day your Starting Rate will be the Ending Rate from the day before. Some students choose to calculate a new starting rate before they begin their lessons for the day instead. Either choice is fine.
And you will calculate a new Ending Rate at the end of your session, after your homework, just like before.
Then continue each day like this.
To calculate your reading speed, follow these steps:
-
Read for 2 minutes.
-
Count the number of lines you read. For example, 126 lines.
-
Divide it by 2 because you read for 2 minutes. In this example, 63 lines.
-
Multiply by the average words per line for your book. If you have 10 words per line (you find this by counting the words in 3 average length lines and then dividing that number by 3), that would be 630 WPM.
Some people only have 1 starting rate and just fill in their ending rate as they learn and use the different speed reading techniques.
